OKEECHOBEE COUNTY, Fla. — The Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) has concluded its investigation into a school bus crash that occurred earlier this week, confirming that the collision was caused by another driver crossing into the bus’s lane.
The accident happened on Monday morning near the intersection of 128th Avenue and Highway 70 West, a two-lane stretch frequently used by local commuters and school traffic. The crash resulted in minor injuries to eight students and the bus driver, all of whom were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and later released.
Sheriff’s Office Confirms Passenger Vehicle at Fault
According to the final report released by the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office, the crash was caused by a passenger vehicle that crossed the center line by several feet, entering directly into the path of the oncoming school bus.
The investigation was led by Traffic Homicide Investigator Corporal Adrian Rogers, whose findings confirmed the initial assessment made at the scene.
“The passenger vehicle crossed over the center line by several feet,” OCSO stated in its official release. “The school bus driver attempted to avoid the collision, but the other vehicle continued into the lane.”
The sheriff’s office also shared two photos from the school bus camera, which showed the other vehicle’s headlights moving into the bus’s lane just two seconds before the impact.
Bus Driver’s Quick Actions Credited for Preventing Tragedy
Officials praised the school bus driver’s swift response in trying to steer away from the oncoming vehicle. OCSO said the driver’s actions helped prevent a more serious or potentially fatal crash.
“To be clear, the investigation has confirmed — without doubt — that the passenger vehicle crossed into the bus’s lane,” the statement read. “The school bus driver acted swiftly and appropriately to protect the students on board and avoid a more serious collision.”
Authorities emphasized that the driver followed all safety protocols and reacted as best as possible given the limited time frame between the vehicle’s approach and impact.
Students Transported With Minor Injuries
Emergency crews from Okeechobee County Fire Rescue responded within minutes of the crash. A total of eight students and the bus driver were transported to a local hospital as a precaution.
Fortunately, none of the injuries were serious, and all victims were released later that day. Parents were promptly notified by Okeechobee County Schools, and replacement transportation was arranged for the remaining students.
Addressing Rumors and Speculation
The sheriff’s office also used its public statement to push back against false claims circulating online regarding who was at fault in the crash.
“There has been speculation and misinformation surrounding this incident,” OCSO noted. “We want to be clear that the investigation has confirmed — without question — the cause of the crash and the school bus driver’s actions to keep students safe.”
Officials urged the public to rely on verified updates from law enforcement and the school district, rather than social media speculation.
Community Response and Road Safety Reminder
Local residents expressed relief that no serious injuries occurred, calling the bus driver a “hero” for maintaining control under pressure.
Parents and school officials thanked first responders and investigators for their swift handling of the situation, as well as the medical staff who cared for the students.

The sheriff’s office reminded drivers to stay alert and avoid distractions on rural highways like U.S. 70, which often have narrow lanes and limited shoulder space. “Crossing the center line, even momentarily, can lead to catastrophic consequences,” OCSO said.
OCSO Concludes Investigation
With the evidence reviewed and findings confirmed, the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office has officially closed the case, determining that no wrongdoing occurred on the part of the school bus driver.
The office also reiterated its appreciation for the public’s patience as the investigation was completed and for the community’s concern for the children involved.
