Arkansas Man Accused of Killing Daughter’s Alleged Rapist Launches Campaign for Sheriff

Lonoke County, AR – Aaron Spencer, 37, who faces second-degree murder charges for the October 2024 killing of 67-year-old Michael Fosler, is now campaigning to become Lonoke County Sheriff, citing a belief that the justice system failed his family.

Shooting Incident and Charges

According to the Lonoke County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting occurred on October 8, 2024, after deputies responded to a missing child report on Highway 236 East. Investigators say Spencer allegedly shot Fosler after discovering his daughter inside a vehicle with Fosler, who had prior felony charges and a no-contact order with the minor.

Spencer, a farmer and military veteran, is currently out on bond as the case continues through the legal system.

“I refuse to stand by while others face these same failures,” Spencer said in a campaign video.
“This campaign isn’t about me. It’s about every parent, every neighbor, every family who deserves to feel safe in their homes and safe in their community.”

Allegations Against Fosler

Spencer’s wife, Heather, described how their daughter, then 13, had allegedly been targeted, groomed, and raped by Fosler, the boyfriend of a family friend, after he obtained her phone number.

“The monster who hurt our child was charged quickly, but released even faster on a $50,000 bond,” Heather Spencer said. “He was awaiting court in December for several felonies in relation to what he did to our child.”

The mother praised her husband as a hero, explaining that he located Fosler and their daughter during a frantic search after noticing unusual activity at home, leading to a collision and confrontation. She stated that Aaron retrieved their child safely, but now faces serious criminal charges.

Official Response

Sheriff John Staley described the situation as tragic and said his office is coordinating with the Lonoke County Prosecuting Attorney regarding the case. Staley clarified that the arrest does not imply backing a predator and that the legal process will determine next steps.

“We’re in consultation with the prosecuting attorney about what to do in this preliminary stage,” Staley told USA Today. “All my deputies and investigators knew at that time is there’s a deceased man, a 14-year-old in the truck, and a dad saying, ‘Hey, I stopped him for this.’”

Spencer’s Candidacy

Spencer’s campaign emphasizes restoring trust in law enforcement and ensuring families feel protected. It is currently unclear whether he has officially filed paperwork for the sheriff’s race.

“This campaign isn’t about me,” Spencer said. “It’s about restoring trust where neighbors know law enforcement is on their side and families know that they will not be left alone in a moment of need.”
