Lawsuit Filed by Pennsylvania Man Against Frontier Airlines After Hot Tea Burn Incident left Him Suffering for Life

A man from Pennsylvania has filed a lawsuit against Frontier Airlines, claiming that he was given a cup of tea that was “excessively” hot and lacked a lid, resulting in a spill that burned his genitalia through his pants.

Sean Miller, 56, claims he suffered burns from his tea during a flight from Myrtle Beach to Philadelphia on September 20, according to a lawsuit he filed on Sunday in a federal court in Pennsylvania.

“Unfortunately, the tea was provided to my client without a lid, filled to the absolute brim of the cup and at an excessively and unreasonably high temperature,” said his lawyer, Adam S. Barrist, in a statement emailed to Law&Crime. “The tea spilled directly through Mr. Miller’s clothing, onto his genitalia. Due to the tightly-situated plane seat configuration, Mr. Miller was unable to get up from his seat after the spill and, instead, was trapped in agonizing pain while his body was being burnt.”

Miller arrived in Philadelphia where an ambulance was waiting, and he was subsequently taken to a hospital before being moved to a burn center for ongoing treatment, as stated in court documents.

Miller endured severe burns and is now facing significant scarring on his genital area and thighs, according to court documents.

“Despite multiple letters sent to Frontier Airlines via FedEx overnight courier, I have received no communication, of any kind, back from Frontier Airlines, concerning, among other issues, the payment of my client’s past medical bills and payment for his ongoing treatment,” Barrist said in his statement. “It was, therefore, necessary to institute suit right away.”

A legal action has been initiated, aiming for over $150,000 to cover medical costs. The complaint claims that Miller endured severe and lasting injuries, which include disfiguring scars, noticeable and distressing discoloration on his genital areas and thighs, as well as a marked reduction in sensation in his penis.

A warehouse worker in Philadelphia is reported to experience sexual dysfunction, post-traumatic stress disorder, various psychological issues, feelings of embarrassment, low self-esteem, and nerve damage across his body, as detailed in court documents.

“As a further result of such accident, Mr. Miller has suffered and will continue to suffer a loss of life’s pleasures,” the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit stated that Frontier had an obligation to Mr. Miller to serve his requested hot beverage safely, ensuring he would not face any risk of injury or disfigurement.
