The senate voted to end the short Government shutdown on Monday, January 22. The shutdown began due to congress not deciding to vote on a proposal on a stopgap funding measure to keep the government continuing. The prospect of continuing funding faced major backlash from both Republicans and Democrats. Thousands of government employees were placed on furlough and many national parks and attractions were closed over the weekend. However, President Trump signed off on a bill on Monday night that allowed government funding for 3 more weeks. Charlotte Yang (11) said, “It was so short that I don’t think it was a big deal.” Many democrats credit this to Senators McConnell and Schumer in bipartisan meetings.

“I respect the passion that many of my friends in this chamber, Democrat and Republican alike bring to the major issue before the Senate, all of these issues,” McConnell said. “But we should not let the political feuds or policy disagreements obscure the simple fact that every member of this body cares deeply about the challenges facing our country.” Arizona senator Jeff Flake switched votes from a no to yes due to endless meetings on the senate floor. Carlos Gonzalez (12) said, “I am surprised that they were able to make an agreement so quickly.”

A huge issue for the Democratic party was the DACA and many democrats voted no as a protest to the possibility of DACA being removed as a government program. With the decision of the government shutdown ending, democrats are still looking for something reasonable on DACA.
