Trouble for the Royal Family

On Sunday March 7, 2021 Prince Harry and Meghan Markle gave an interview with the well known, Oprah Winfrey. After being widely advertised for weeks as the first interview they had given since their separation from the royal family, they aired the interview on CBS. In this interview, many shocking details were revealed such as racist comments from members of the family about their son, Archie’s skin color. The couple called out members in the family such as Prince Charles, Harry’s dad and Prince William, Harry’s brother, for the lack of support. Markle also addressed the drama with Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, and said that the drama between them had been forgiven. In the end, the couple ultimately disclosed that the reason they left the royal family and England is because they lacked support and help. They said it was their only way out.

The reactions from the interview were as widespread as the opinion of Markle’s were. Many believed the fact that racist comments were coming from the leaders were cruel and should be punished. Others believe that Markle exaggerated the story and is still the villain here. The interview has been compared to other interviews like the 1970 interview with the abdicated King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson that had posed problems for the palace and even more known Princess Diana’s “Panorama” confessional.

Since the interview, there have been some comments from the Royal Family. Queen Elizabeth II said the royal family is “saddened” to learn the extent of the challenges faced by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. The queen also said, “The issues raised, particularly that of race, are concerning. While some recollections may vary, they are taken very seriously and will be addressed by the family privately.” Along with reactions from the Royal Family, there was a notable reaction from the Good Morning Britain host, Piers Morgan, who quit his job after being criticized for judging Markle. The drama that is circling the family is not new for a monarch that has been ruling since the 10th century. It will be interesting to see how the drama pans out and which members of the royal family will speak about the issue.
