The Emmy-award winning political thriller, “House of Cards” was rocked by a scandal in late October when actor Kevin Spacey, who plays U.S. President Francis Underwood, was accused by Anthony Rapp for making sexual advance back in 1986, when he was 14. Netflix has announced they fired Spacey after these allegations. Netflix renewed the show for a 6th and final season in which Robin Wright, who plays First Lady Claire Underwood, will be the new President of the U.S. and the new star of the show covering Spacey’s absence. However, the decision to make Robin Wright play the role as President was already confirmed in the Season 5 finale, when Francis Underwood resigns in disgrace and Claire Underwood becomes President. The final season will begin production in early 2018 and will contain 8 episodes, which is slightly low considering every season before had 13 episodes.

Students at Hamilton who watch the show have their own opinions on the changes of the show. When asked about the Spacey scandal and if his absence will make an impact on the show, Tyler Curvey (11) responded “It’s crazy to see how an actor you loved did something like that and now he can’t be ever looked the same. I think the show will not be very different without him”. When asked about if Robin Wright would be a good replacer for Spacey, Sophie Borest (11) said “I think she will make a great replacer for Spacey because she’s been in the show long enough to get used to and she plays a big role in the show”.

The final season was expected to be released Spring 2018, but because of the production hiatus, it won’t be released until probably 2019. During the earlier production, 2 episodes had already been filmed with Spacey in both of them, but the production crew have tossed them away and will have to refilm them. Netflix will spend about roughly $50 million in production. With a new star in the show and trying to surpass the Spacey scandal, House of Cards hopes to go out in style with Season 6 in a positive and uplifting ending.
