On January 26th,the new biopic following the infamous serial killer, Ted Bundy, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Zac Efron has taken on the role of Bundy along side Lily Collins who plays Elizabeth Kloepfer, Ted’s girlfriend. The director of the film, Joe Berlinger,  has also directed a documentary about Ted Bundy that recently came out on Netflix. However, the documentary narrates through the tapes recorded by Bundy in his last years on death row, while the movie gives a dramatized representation of Bundy’s life as killer.

The official trailer was released a few days ago, which sparked a lot of buzz on social media. Many expressed excitement for the movie, while others expressed concern about the depiction of the murderer. People were infatuated with Zac Efron’s version of Ted Bundy, taking on the charming charismatic persona that Bundy was known for. Sydney Jardina (11) said, “I think that Efron is really convincing in this role, I’m really excited to see him in the movie.” However, others believe that the trailer romanticized the vicious killer by portraying him as an attractive endearing man with a dark secret.

Tiffany Ticlo (11) expressed, “I think the trailer gives the wrong idea about the kind of person Bundy was. He should be seen as the monster that he truly was.” Although, people have jumped to the defense of the movies depiction of Bundy, saying that portraying him in this way shows that Bundy was not seen as the typical ‘killer type’ which is how he tricked many of his victims. Therefore, they say, it’s necessary that audiences see just why Ted Bundy was so infamous: because he went by unsuspected to the public.  Regardless of the controversy, there is still a lot anticipation for the films release to the public. Sydney Case (11) shared, “I am really interested to see what the film will be like and if it is as good as the trailer!” It is unclear when the film will be released, all that is known is that it will be later this year.
