News of an upcoming prequel to the beloved movie Grease has been circling the media sites everywhere. The prequel “Summer Loving” will tell the story of how Danny Zucko and Sandy Olsson met the summer before their senior year in high school. “Summer Lovin’” is a quote from the song, “Summer Nights,” from the original movie, which describes how Danny and Sandy spent their time together. Some say that the movie is pointless, because the song already told the story of how their summer went. However Kanani Tacderan (11)  says, “I don’t think the storyline will be redundant of the song, instead they can go more into detail about their summer and their lives before they met.” In the song, the couple have different ideas of what actually happened that summer, so this new movie will reveal what really happened.

There has already been controversy about whether or not this movie should even be made. Many feel that making any kind of remake of a very successful movie is a always a mistake because it will never live up the original. This proved true with the failure of the sequel, “Grease 2” with Michelle Pfieffer. Avanthika Mekela (11) says, “I think it isn’t smart choice to do a prequel because of the first ones success, but then again hard core fans would love this comeback.” The original actors, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta have also been brought up with the current discussion about the prequel. Alayna Campbell (11) shared, “if the original cast made a cameo it would be a really cool nod to the first movie.” Although Travolta hasn’t put out an official statement, sources say that he would be willing to make a cameo in the movie if it is up to his standards. However, Olivia Newton-John has said that she thinks that because the original movie has so much success, an additional movie is not necessary. She said that they should appreciate the movie and the story for how it is rather than try to replicate the success of the original.

This upcoming prequel would not be the first time a new generation would be exposed to the Grease storyline. In 2016, Grease Live broadcasted on TV with Julianne Hough and Aaron Tviet as the Sandy and Danny. The show proved to be successful, as it won five Emmys in the process. One can only hope that the prequel is as successful as this remake, although it is unlikely. Paramount Players is producing the movie while John August has been hired to write the script. Currently, it is unknown when the prequel is set to come out, as it is still in the very early days of producing. Until then, Grease fans will continue to anticipate over this exciting new addition to the Grease story.
