On Monday, May 13, Fox announced that the hit series will no longer be on air after its’ upcoming season. The drama stars Taraji P. Henson and Terrence Howard, starring as Cookie and Lucious Lyon, a married couple who head an ever drama-plagued musical empire. Many fans of the drama are disappointed but aren’t surprised due to the previous events that took place involving Jussie Smollett, who plays Jamal.

Announcing the show’s renewal late last month, Fox declined to say for sure whether Jussie Smollett would be returning at some point during the new season. Rubi Hernandez (12)  says, “I think he had something to do with the show ending.” Smollett did not appear in the final two episodes of the show’s current season, having been written out as he dealing with the aftermath of what Chicago police have said was a staged attack. At the end of the season, Smollett’s character, Jamal, the middle brother of the Lyon family at the center of the show, was said to be on his honeymoon with his new husband. Jaden Gonzalez (11) said, “I really don’t like him or the show anymore after what he did, it’s really disgusting.” Smollett has starred on “Empire” since the show’s start in 2015. Smolletts’ charges were dropped due to prosecutors not having sufficient evidence to convict him. Police have apologized but Jussie wasn’t buying it.

Fox has said that there is an impending end for ‘Empire’. Many fans wonder if Smollett will be returning, at least for a quick appearance for the last season. Henson and Howard have not commented on the shows sudden end but people think they are devastated.
