Beyoncé Changes Lyric in album After Being Accused of Ableism

In Beyonce’s song “Heated” Feat Drake she uses the word “spaz” and gets called out and accused of offending people with disabilities.

For those who don’t know The word “spaz” origin comes from “spastic.” This could be an offensive words to those with spastic paralysis or cerebral palsy. It is a derogatory term towards those with disabilities.

Beyonce’s publicist quotes “The word, not used intentionally in a harmful way, will be replaced.” This isn’t the first time an artist has been called out for using an ableist term.
Disability advocate Hannah Diviney has also called out Singer Lizzo for using the word she says,
“I thought we’d changed the music industry and started a global conversation about why ableist language – intentional or not – has no place in music.”

Black disability activist Vilissa Thompson has also spoken on this issue and states “The onus is on us to not just unlearn but also update and improve the way that we communicate with each other, so that our words are intentionally used, so that they don’t cause unintentional harm.”
