The Hamilton Theatre Department is in the midst of preparing for a spring musical production of  Bye Bye Birdie, a stage musical based on a book by Michael Stewart, with lyrics by Lee Adams and music by Charles Strouse. The story is set in 1958. The story was inspired by the phenomenon of popular singer Elvis Presley and his draft notice into the Army in 1957. The original 1960–1961 Broadway production was a Tony Award–winning success. The show found its way into many movies, becoming a popular choice for high school and college productions.

Ellen Napolitano will be portraying Ms. Peterson, her second role in a theatre production for her junior year. Napolitano, director of Night of Scenes, (11) says, “We’ve been rehearsing since January 4th, immediately after auditions.” The production is led by students with the guidance of instructors. This includes creation of props, costumes, dances, lights, and many more factors for a successful show. Taylor Garcia (11) describes the “collaboration (needed) for the band, technical theatre, dance choreographer, and actors to all be in tune.” The time commitment leads to a great, smooth opening night.

Dress rehearsals will take place in the weeks leading up to opening night, April 12th. Head Costume Designer, Emily McDonald (12) says that, “We are in the process of purchasing and modifying costumes to maintain a perfect color concept.” Along with the sets, music, and actors, costumes are a key part of any production. The audience will, no doubt, be in awe when the characters step on stage. Several students plan to support their friends and their artistic passions and abilities. Rehearsals will run for four months with four directors, making sure every piece of the show is precise, on stage and behind the scenes.
