On February 2nd, eighteen Hamilton students traveled to Glendale to audition for the Southwest Region Honor Choir. Six of those eighteen placed in the choir which includes: Cassi Stevens, Abbie Jin, Paige Decoster, Emma Rittenhouse, Burke Peterson, and Ashlyn Kronik. These students were scored based off how well they can sing a pitch that they had prepared as well as a sheet of music that had just been given to them. These tests are meant to display how well they work under pressure as well as how efficient they work with others.

Cassie Stevens (12) expressed, “I was surprised that I got in, it’s a fun experience although terrifying the first time that you audition. I auditioned last year and didn’t get in, so this is my first time placing.” The audition process is intense and competitive which requires students to be focused and determined. Burke Peterson (11) shared, “In the audition there’s a solo piece and a  cite reading. I had fun doing that, I was a little sick, but I was still able to make it.” After placing in the choir, students are given two weeks to learn five different pieces all of varied genres, some Shakespeare, old hymns and in different languages. They will be able to perfect and perform their pieces in the Honor Choir Festival at McClintock High School at the end of the two weeks alongside a hundred other students who also got into the regional choir. Ashlyn Kronik (10) explained, “I’ve been practicing a lot. This weekend I practiced for eight hours, just trying to memorize all the songs. Some of them are around 23 pages long, so I want to make sure that I know them really well.”  Although students are now apart of the regional choir, they can still be cut off if they show up to the festival and don’t know the songs completely. Needless to say, there is a lot of work to be done!

After these students participate in the Honor Choir Festival on February 15th they will be able to audition for the All-State Choir, which is the top honor for a AZ choral musician.Congratulations  to all the students that placed last weekend in the Southwest Regional Choir and good luck as they continue on to advance on their journey!
