COVID-19 effects of Sports

April 17, 2020
The biggest effect I have seen in my section of sports in Journalism is on the Olympics. The 2020 Olympics has been postponed a whole year and won’t be held till 2021. With olympian training at my home gym, I have seen the effects of this first hand. Mykayla Skinner who is a gymnast hoping to secure a spot in the next games and just recently getting married she has felt the pressure of having to train for an extra year. She has had to postpone moving from Arizona to Utah with her husband and finishing her collegiate gymnastics career in order to try and go pro. Mykayla commented, “One great thing from the virus is that I can come to the gym more and get extra training on my own.” Sports are gaining more time to prepare for the next Olympics but are obtaining a setback in the players’ personal lives.
At our own school Hamilton, the coronavirus has affected our spring sports since the rest of the school year is over. These teams had an abrupt end to their season and I was looking forward to covering my beat on baseball. These players on the baseball team shared their feelings on social media about the virus concluding their season. This included senior Ryan Figueroa (12) “ We had a lot to show as a team this year sad to not have this last season with my team.” Unfortunately, a lot of sports ended quickly this year but this can help for a stronger season next year! #Gohuskies
