The Hamilton Football Varsity Team got its second win of the season in exciting fashion against Highland with a final score of 31-24. With only a second left, up a touchdown on their own 11-yard line, the Huskies managed to stop the Hawks and prevented the game from potentially going into overtime.

Junior cornerback, Zachery Lewis, made the game-winning tackle as he stopped Hawks senior quarterback Gage Dayley from diving across the goal line. He was selected as the Defensive Player of the Game, as not only did he make the goal-line stand, and he also added one pass deflection, four solo tackles, and two assists to his fantastic night. Although the defense had plenty of great moments throughout the game, Lewis was the one that truly shined for the Huskies. Braeden Winters (12) was very impressed by the performance of Lewis as he “really came up big for the team.”

The offense, as well as the Highland defense, had a great showing and a difficult time slowing them down from the start. Senior quarterback, Nick Arvay, had a fantastic night, completing 26 out of his 33 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns. Gabe Armenta, senior running back for the Huskies, had a very successful night on the ground, as he rushed for 140 and two touchdowns, one of his rushing attempts went 56 yards and set up a touchdown. Brenden Rice (12) also had a great performance, as he caught seven passes for 61 yards and one touchdown. With the Huskies being tied at 24-24 in the fourth quarter, the offense showed great adversity as they drove the ball straight down the field and ended the drive with Arvay throwing the game-winning 31-yard dime to senior wide receiver, Kaden Hattendorf. Christopher Esparza (12) commented on the performance of the team by noting how he was “thrilled to see another strong showing by the offense.”

Although it was a close one for the Huskies, they still came out victorious at the end which makes people, like Jacob Gonzales (12), “optimistic for what the rest of the season holds.” The Hamilton Football Team will take on the Arbor View Aggies from Las Vegas at 7:00 pm this Friday, September 6th, in hopes of continuing their big start in 2019.
