Learning During the Pandemic

Briana McCauley

With Covid cases during these dangerous times, school is nothing like it used to be. This semester has been one of the most crazy and interesting semesters I’ve experienced. We all started off online and were given the choice at the beginning of the year to return in-person or do COA for our second quarter. I chose to be in-person, but it is very different compared to past years. Although things are different, I’m glad I chose to be in-person. Quite frankly, I got tired of learning through a google meet. I’ve found that I learn better when I’m taught in the classroom, and I already understand the material a lot more than I did from home. However, I did like it too. I woke up five minutes until my first meet and I ate food the entire time, so it wasn’t that bad. Classes are very much different too. We can’t walk around the classroom and talk to people; we mainly have to stay in our assigned seats.

Besides the negatives, there are a lot of good things about this year too. I have actually enjoyed being back in-person because I didn’t get to interact with many people during quarantine. Being with family isn’t bad, but being with just them for months back-to-back has made everyone go crazy, myself included. Since then, I’ve gotten the chance to meet new people who I’ve grown close to; many of whom I wouldn’t have met if I stayed online. So far, those people have had a big impact on my life and I would be a different version of myself without them. I don’t particularly love all of my classes, but I enjoy a few of them. I really like my math class because my teacher makes learning fun and she is great at her job. We also have more time to walk to classes, which is nice since this school is so big. It used to be only five minutes, but now we have seven. It’s not that much of a difference, but it’s a difference nonetheless. When I first walked in, I felt so overwhelmed. My life was changing so much and I was scared for this year. The transition from middle school to high school was very scary, especially during these times. However, besides all the changes this year, I have enjoyed being back at school.
