Marketing students learn more about the foundations of budgeting and transactions this week with the help of the Mountain America Credit Union crew.

This week in class, marketing students have been discussing the ways of budgeting and dealing with money. They have learned about the acronym S.M.A.R.T. which stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and timebound. This can be useful when creating goals for yourself in the future. There are also different types of goals such as budgeting for short-term: within a year, saving for mid-term: one to five years and investing for long term: more than five years. Additionally, their team has encouraged students to make a checklist to better deal with their money. For example, it is said that it is important to select a system, list all income, list all expenses, analyze spending and revise spending. To learn more about a student’s experience with the Mountain America team and what they have to say, I have interviewed Simoni Thakkar.

When asked about news things she learned from the presentations, Thakkar said, “I learned the proper ways to budget and the components of checks.” She also talked about their ability to present to an audience referring to communication skills and informational slides. In class, the team handed out candy and pizza to keep the audience entertained and engaged. For instance, each time someone asked or answered a question, they got a piece of candy. Thakkar also describes the importance of outside perspectives like organizations and companies that teach students about the real-like working environment. She specifically points out her interest with their presentation as she is getting prepared for her future career. Thakkar says, “They have helped me learn to manage my finances.” Overall, it has been greatly educational and resourceful to have Mountain America’s team at Hamilton High.
