Total Lunar Eclipse May 15, 2022
One of the biggest highlights of the year in Astronomy is a Total Lunar Eclipse that will be visible across the United States on the night of Sunday, May 15, 2022. A total lunar eclipse occurs when a full moon passes behind the earth’s shadow. The moon turns red during a total lunar eclipse because red wavelengths are refracted onto the moon. In other words, all of the world’s sunrises and sunsets are being refracted onto the moon. The eclipse is visible in North America, South America, Europe and Africa. The eclipse is mostly visible here in Chandler, Ariz. It is safe to look at a lunar eclipse with the naked eye.
