Nikolas Cruz is formally sentenced to 34 life terms in prison for the Parkland shooting.

The decision to sentence the shooter to life in prison  rather than give him the death penalty came down to a single juror, a father whose daughter was killed in the massacre. Ryan Petty, whose daughter Alaina was killed in the massacre made the assertion at a press conference.

The jury decided to not give the death penalty and the famlies of the victims were stunned. Cruz pled guilty last October to murdering 14 students and three staff members and injuring 17 others. Prosecutor Mike Satz walked the jury through the gut wrenching acts Cruz committed, including him shooting terrified students  at point blank range.

Cruz sat silent and emotionless while each count was read out. The victims parents sat with their heads down in disbelief. Many parents believed that the jury failed and that their children did not receive justice.
