Hockey knocks off Basha/Perry, advance to Semifinals

The Hamilton D1 Varsity Hockey team defeated the Basha Perry Bears last Saturday, winning 2-1. After a rough half of the 1st period, which saw the Huskies in their own defensive zone for most of it, Junior Carson Gylling took the puck from the right corner, walked in and went short-side top shelf to go up 1-0. The Huskies would have to fight off a horde of penalties in the late 1st and 2nd Periods but then were finally rewarded with a power-play of their own with 1:36 left in the 2nd. Midway through the powerplay, Senior Forward Dylan Gunnare threw the puck on net from the point, and Josef Nermyr (11), would find the rebound tap it in to extend the Huskies lead to 2-0 with 42 seconds left in the 2nd period. “Dylan was able to get the puck on net, and I was able to find it and put it in,” Nermyr said after he was asked about his goal. The Huskies played lockdown defense in the third, completely shutting down the offensive attack of the Bears. The Bears would eventually find the back of the net with 6.1 seconds left, ending Senior goalie Hayden Manning’s bid for a shutout. “It’s not the greatest feeling, losing the shutout with such little time left,” Manning said, “But at the end of the day, the win was what mattered most.” The horn would sound and the Huskies are back in the semifinals since the 2017-18 season. It will be no small order though, as the Huskies will take on the 3x defending state champions, the Pinnacle Pioneers. “They’ve won the championship three years in a row, so that group knows what it’s like to be in those big games, but I believe that we have the group to pull off the win,” said Sophomore forward Garrett Falcone. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:20 pm at the Ice Den Scottsdale. This game will be an absolute classic, so come on out and support your Huskies. #GoHuskies
