The Hamilton D1 Varsity Hockey Team has done it! They beat the Chaparral Firebirds 7-5 in an absolute war to claim the school’s 1st state Championship since they became a Division 1 team in the 2016-17 season. Senior goalie Hayden Manning made 20 saves on 25 shots, and Forward Carter Newlin (12) racked up 6 points (4G, 2A) in a memorable championship game performance. Unsurprisingly, Newlin won the Game MVP award at the end. Hamilton had the best start to a championship game that they could have, jumping out to a 3-0 lead 1:49 into the 2nd period in front of a very hostile Chaparral fan section. Chaparral would respond with all-out assault in the second period, scoring 4 straight to capture a 4-3 lead with 1:03 left. Newlin responded 33 seconds later, banking a rebound off the right pad of Firebirds goalie Caleb Wall. The Huskies would capitalize on a golden opportunity in the 3rd period when Newlin would cash-in a rebound to complete his hattrick and put the Huskies back up 5-4. Hamilton would fight tooth-and-nail all the way until Sophomore Kaiden Willa put home a nice pass from Carter Newlin to give the Huskies the all-important 2-goal lead with 2:14 left. 48 seconds, however, Chaparral would find the back of the net to put the game at 6-5 with 1:26 to go. Then, 16 seconds later on the empty net, Newlin would score to fourth to actually put the game away, and the Huskies would celebrate the win in front of a large Hamilton fanbase.
The Huskies have qualified for the 2020 USA Hockey High National Tournament in Frisco Texas March 26-30. Good Luck and once again, Congrats Hockey!! #GoHuskies
