AIA Recommends the Postponement of the Winter Sports Season for High Schools

The Arizona Interscholastic Association, or AIA, recommended that the start of the winter sports season be pushed back to Jan. This action comes after another influx of COVID-19 cases statewide. The sports in question are girls and boys basketball, girls and boys soccer, spirit line and wrestling. As of now, there is still a possibility that these sports will have a season, but the outlook is bleak. Many teams are still preparing for the possibility of a season, as to not miss any training time.

Although many athletes may disagree, this is a safe move to be made. Traveling during the holidays is a risk for players because they are more at risk for infection. By postponing the winter season, AIA is protecting players from getting sick and exposing their teammates. While protocols such as wearing a mask, and socially distancing would be in effect during team practices, the risk is too high for officials.

The 2020-2021 winter season will begin in early Jan., if the AIA and Superintendent of the CUSD vote to move forward with the sports.
