Winter Sports Delayed Until January

All  Winter Arizona High Sports will be postponed until after the first of the year, due to COVID-19.

Sports and athletics are activities that many love, including the students of Hamilton High School. COVID-19 has created countless struggles, making it a very stressful year for everyone. As many know, this pandemic has restrained many student athletes from having a normal season. Due to precautions that must be taken, it is sad to say that winter sports will be postponed until January. Even though fall sports were played, many athletes had to quarantine for 14 days, as well as get tested for corona due to other athletes getting it. Some teams were forced to cancel a game, or even multiple games, because one athlete tested positive.

Even though sports are loved by many, it is a wise decision to delay winter sports. Masks aren’t being worn and athletes get well within six feet of one another, and that could potentially result in someone testing positive. This break could help their bodies breathe and take a break from sports, especially if the athlete is a returning athlete from fall sports. During this unforeseen break, an athlete wanting to play could take this time to quarantine themselves, which could better prevent any more cases. According to the Centers for Disease Control And Prevention, teenagers are twice as likely to become infected, compared to that of younger children. Dr. Muge Cevik, an expert at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, informed “Less emphasis has been put forward on high schools or universities…that may be much more of a problem.” Hamilton is lucky enough to have many rules in place to prevent the spread of this dangerous disease, but that doesn’t mean that it will 100% be prevented. Changes are being made everyday and nothing is set in stone, so there is a possibility that it could be pushed back even farther. Please remember to stay safe and wear your mask, and go Huskies!
