On May 15, 2019, The San Jose Sharks traveled to St. Louis, Missouri to take on the St. Louis Blues in Game 3 of the Western Conference Finals. After the Sharks squandered a 3-1 lead in the game, They tied the game with one minute to go thanks to Logan Couture, who scored his 14th goal of the playoffs. The game would eventually to go to overtime, where the Erik Karlsson would score his second goal of the game, about 5 and a half minutes in. Sophomore Keaton Hubbard commented on the issue, saying that “It’s really disappointing that a really exciting game ended that way, but rules are rules and the play couldn’t be reviewed”. Indeed, as the Rule Book states that a missed handpass cannot be reviewed for replay. As mad as some fans were last night, nothing could be done.

Social media blew up after that game, with many voicing their opinions on what they thought should’ve happened. Josef Nermyr, (10), said that “Many fans were creating memes and using a very creative language, as well as saying the refs sucked”. The problem with these fans though, is that they don’t know what it’s like it to be a NHL Referee. Brennan Jaco (9), said “As a referee myself, I agree that the refs are in a rough position. It’s unfair for people with no reffing experience to tell them how they should ref.” There a lot of controversy surrounding the Sharks, as this is the second time now they have won a game controversially. Game four is on Friday night, let’s hope that there isn’t as much controversy.
