OpenAI, the developer of ChatGPT, has lately thought about creating a web browser that would integrate with its chatbot, the Information reported Thursday, and has independently talked or negotiated arrangements to power search functions.
OpenAI has discussed the search product with makers of websites and apps including Conde Nast, Redfin, Eventbrite and Priceline, the paper reported, referencing individuals who have seen prototypes or drawings of the goods.
The action might set the Sam Altman-led startup against Google, which controls the lion’s share of the search and browser market. With SearchGPT, OpenAI has already made its way onto the search industry.
Alphabet, the owner of Google, has been working to increase its artificial intelligence heft since ChatGPT’s introduction in late 2022, responding with its own generative AI chatbot, Gemini, last year.
After ending approximately 5% lower on Thursday, Alphabet’s shares were down about 1% in extended trade.
After the Department of Justice said Google should sell its Chrome browser to break its monopoly on internet search, the company’s supremacy in the browser industry grew unstable.
A major commercial partner of Google, OpenAI has also discussed running artificial intelligence capabilities on Samsung-made devices, the Information story added, citing individuals briefed about the matter.
The company already has a relationship with Apple whereby the technology of OpenAI powers the “Apple Intelligence” capabilities on new devices of the iPhone maker.
The Information story, however, said OpenAI is not at all near to starting a browser.
