Arctic air sweeps into San Antonio, causing a significant drop in temperatures

San Antonio is bracing for a significant drop in temperature. Winter-like conditions are set to arrive for a few days in many parts of Texas, and San Antonio will also experience its share of cold air.

San Antonio is set to experience a significant drop in temperatures on Friday as arctic, dry air moves in. Afternoon temperatures are predicted to stay below 55 degrees on both Friday and Saturday. The Alamo City is experiencing its first significant cold air since summer’s end.

The National Weather Service Austin-San Antonio office reports that the dry low-level air and favorable overrunning pattern returning on Friday will result in a significantly cooler day than previously anticipated. “Expect light showers to move into northern Hill Country by midday [Friday], allowing air temperatures to rise a few degrees from the morning lows.”

San Antonio will see high temperatures reaching 53 degrees on both Friday, December 6, and Saturday afternoon. Expect even colder temperatures, with lows reaching the mid to low 40s by Friday night.

The colder temperatures will be more pronounced in the Texas Hill Country north of San Antonio, which is quite common due to their elevation and northern location. Fredericksburg will see temperatures staying below 50 degrees on Friday and Saturday, with nighttime lows falling into the mid to upper 30s.

No freezes are expected soon for central Texas’ rolling hills, but the Hill Country has a better chance of rain compared to the metropolitan areas. Rain and thunderstorms are expected from Friday night to Sunday afternoon, with chances ranging from 30% to 70% in areas from Kerrville to Fredericksburg.

A cold front is set to bring a cooling trend that will affect many areas in Texas. Amarillo and other cities in the Texas Panhandle are expected to experience nighttime temperatures dropping to the low 30s on Thursday night, with continued declines below 40 degrees throughout the weekend. Afternoon temperatures are expected to be unexpectedly higher than in San Antonio, hitting the mid to upper 60s.

North Texas, including Dallas and Fort Worth, is expected to experience near-freezing temperatures overnight beginning Thursday, December 5, with lows remaining in the low 40s throughout the weekend. Expect chilly afternoons this weekend, with temperatures remaining below 50 degrees.
