Man Who Murdered Grandfather, Then Praised Him at Funeral, Sentenced to Prison

HPP: While speaking at his grandfather’s funeral, a man from Florida will be sentenced to about twenty years in jail for the murder of his grandfather, whom he referred to as “Grampy.”

In the case of his grandfather, James S. Khoury, who was 71 years old, Joshua Nareau, who is 24 years old, entered a plea of not guilty to the charge of second-degree murder on Monday.

According to the records of the court, Circuit Judge Shannon H. McFee granted Nareau a sentence of 246 years in prison, which is equivalent to 20 and a half years, taking into account the time that he has already served.

During the funeral service for his grandfather, Joshua Nareau made it seem as though he was not the person who was responsible for his grandfather’s passing. After taking a few big breaths, he stepped up to the podium and took the microphone.

“Jim, I called him Grampy, by blood he was my grandfather, as a person he was my father. He helped raise me. He made me the person I am today,” he stated to the crowd of mourners. “You are all here because you knew and loved my grandfather and I thank you so much for that. My goal in life is to be as good as this man was. He helped everyone in this room in some way and I know that.’

Khoury was a well-liked deacon at North Port’s First Baptist Church.

On December 28, 2023, at approximately 5:15 a.m., Khoury’s wife called 911 to report that her husband had been shot. When deputies arrived, they discovered Khoury in front of his house with a gunshot wound to his chest. His gun was holstered at his hip. He had his lunchbox beside him. When paramedics arrived, they declared Khoury dead.

Nareau was seated in the grass next to the house as deputies were searching the area. According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, Nareau told investigators that he hurried from his home, which is a few hundred yards away, after his grandma contacted him following the gunshot.

In an interview with detectives, Khoury’s wife claimed to have kissed her husband before he left the house. Her husband phoned for her after hearing a gunshot a few seconds after he stepped outside.

She heard him collapse as she raced outside. According to the affidavit, she “knew he was dead” after noticing a gunshot wound to his chest.

She hurried back inside, terrified, and dialed 911. She informed investigators that her husband had told her the previous day that he had heard a gunshot on his way to work, but that he had not noticed anything else unusual.

She claimed that following the shooting, she gave Nareau a call. Nareau said to deputies that he was in bed when his grandma called, got ready, and hurried over.

She informed him there might be a sniper outside, he added. In the affidavit, detectives pointed out that Khoury’s wife never brought up the subject of a sniper. Additionally, he allegedly said that he saw no other people in the area and did not hear any gunfire.

Later, investigators discovered a projectile in a big pine tree, indicating that the gunman was on the house’s south side. According to authorities, Nareau would have traveled there to reach his grandparents’ home.

After the incident, Nareau’s grandmother did, in fact, call him, according to a download of his phone. However, the statement also stated that he had traveled several hundred meters at the time of the shooting, which is approximately the distance to and from his grandparents’ house.

He told deputies that he had been in bed before his grandmother called, which is when the action took place.

According to the affidavit, Nareau was questioned by detectives about this but once more stated that he was in bed and “didn’t know” why the cellphone data would indicate otherwise.

An examination of the projectile discovered in the tree revealed that it might have originated from Nareau’s “Savage” bolt-action rifle. According to the affidavit, the lab results on February 14 verified that the projectile originated from Nareau’s gun. Investigators did not provide a reason for the shooting.
