Historic South Milwaukee Project Will Add 81 Affordable Units for Residents Earning $15Hour or Less

On Monday, Nov. 18, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley revealed a $3 million investment aimed at creating affordable housing units, linked to the redevelopment of the old Bucyrus-Erie site in South Milwaukee.

The project is set to be situated at 1100 Milwaukee Avenue in South Milwaukee, according to a news release. Scott Crawford, Inc. is developing a project that will result in 171 rental housing units.

81 units will be set aside for affordable housing aimed at residents earning $15/hour or less. Additionally, eight units will be specifically reserved for veterans earning under 60 percent of the area median income, who will be referred directly by Milwaukee County DHHS Veterans’ Services.

A $50 million mixed-use development is set to transform three old Bucyrus-Erie office buildings and add a new structure.

Milwaukee County is allocating $2.5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) and $500,000 from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for the development of 81 affordable housing units.

Officials describe this development as a significant milestone in the downtown revitalization plan for South Milwaukee. It aligns with a national trend of converting office buildings into residential spaces, offering a combination of market-rate and affordable housing units.
