Baldur’s Gate 3: How to Find the Necromancy of Thay in Act 1?

Baldur’s Gate 3 is packed with exploration opportunities and hidden secrets, offering an experience so rich that one playthrough often feels insufficient. If your time is limited, one item you won’t want to miss is the Necromancy of Thay, a powerful book filled with dark magic.

This valuable artifact can first be obtained in Act 1 during the “Search the Cellar” quest. While its full potential becomes evident in Act 3, early access to this item can significantly enhance your journey. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you locate the Necromancy of Thay and make the most of it.

Necromancy of Thay Location: Step-by-Step Guide

1. Finding Ilyn Toth’s Lair

Begin your journey by heading to the Whispering Depths, hidden beneath the Blighted Village at coordinates X:37, and Y:379. This area is home to Ilyn Toth’s Lair, where the book is guarded. To reach the lair, you’ll need to locate the secret entrance and navigate a conversation puzzle involving the Ornate Mirror. If puzzles aren’t your thing, refer to an Ornate Mirror guide for help.

2. Exploring Ilyn Toth’s Laboratory

Once inside, loot the area to gather supplies and head towards the gated door on the eastern side of the lair. To proceed, you’ll encounter a skill check that reveals a pressure plate on the floor. Disarm the plate to avoid potential damage.

3. Unlocking the Gate

The gated door can be opened using a Rusty Key, usually found in the lab, or through picklocking. Behind the door, you’ll find a cage containing the Necromancy of Thay resting on a table. However, picking up the book isn’t as simple as it seems.

4. Avoiding Gargoyle Traps

The moment you pick up the book, gargoyle traps are triggered. To safely retrieve it, you can:

  • Disarm both traps beforehand.
  • Use a character with high durability to handle the damage.
  • Summon a Mage Hand spell to safely bring the book to you.

5. Using the Necromancy of Thay

Once acquired, the book requires a character with high Wisdom to unlock its secrets. Gale is an excellent candidate due to his natural proficiencies. You’ll also need the Dark Amethyst, a crucial item to open the book and access its power.
