How Tampa Bay Girl Scouts Are Helping Rebuild California After Wildfires – You Won’t Believe Their Generosity

As the wildfires continue to devastate communities in Southern California, residents of Los Angeles are grappling with the overwhelming task of rebuilding their homes and lives. Amidst the chaos, Girl Scouts in Tampa Bay are stepping up to lend a helping hand, showing that the power of sisterhood knows no boundaries.

The Girl Scouts in Tampa Bay, many of whom have experienced the devastation of disasters firsthand, are reaching out to their sister troops in California, offering support in meaningful ways. After enduring the impact of hurricanes in their own community last year, these scouts understand the importance of support and solidarity during tough times.

Molly Rosario, a dedicated Girl Scout for 11 years, has always believed that being a part of this organization is about more than just selling cookies and making crafts. She has learned that the Girl Scouts are a global network that extends far beyond her local troop.

“Everybody is really supportive, and it’s nice to have automatic friends in Girl Scouts,” says Molly, reflecting on the sense of community she has felt during difficult moments. It was during last year’s hurricanes that Molly truly understood the depth of the support she had from scouts around the world, including from California. “They wrote cards to us when we were in these storms, and we just wanted to inspire them and make them feel that they are also not alone,” she said.

For Molly and her mom Jennifer, who also serves as her troop leader, it was important to return the favor after seeing the wildfires tear through communities in California. Jennifer knew that the Girl Scouts could provide a small but meaningful token of support to help those who were affected.

“As soon as I saw the destruction caused by the fires, I knew I needed to figure out a way to give back,” said Jennifer. “Maybe we can send old uniforms or our Girl Scout handbooks. Those families probably lost everything in the fires, so I wanted to find a way to ship those things to them.”

However, the first step in offering support was something simple but impactful – sending heartfelt cards. The Girl Scouts in Tampa Bay quickly began making and sending cards to their sister troops in California, a gesture that would go a long way in showing their solidarity.

Christina Mitchell, Chief Field Operations Officer for the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida, believes that small acts like these make a world of difference.

“When people started reaching out, it’s like someone else sees what’s going on,” said Christina. “And there are others, not in the middle of the crisis, who are there for you, ready to help in any way they can, whether it’s big or small.”

Christina further added that the Girl Scouts are eager to return to normal routines, as helping others is part of their mission. The organization encourages scouts to engage in community service and earn patches for their efforts. It’s clear that this support goes beyond just offering help—it’s about creating meaningful connections and fostering a sense of unity in times of adversity.

While the immediate act of sending cards was meaningful, there are other ways the Girl Scouts of Tampa Bay are extending their support. The money raised from Girl Scout cookie sales is crucial in funding the activities of local troops. In light of the fires, many local Girl Scouts are planning to use some of the funds to help their sister troops in Southern California.

In times of crisis, the Girl Scouts continue to show that they are not just a group of young girls with a shared mission—they are a powerful sisterhood that stands together, no matter the distance or challenge. As the scouts in Tampa Bay extend their support to their counterparts in California, it’s a reminder that kindness and generosity have no boundaries, and that even in the most difficult times, a helping hand can make all the difference.
