The vehicle veered off the road on the west side of Interstate 71 and collided with a concrete support pillar of the Interstate 270 overpass. The police report indicates that the vehicle suffered significant damage and ignited.
The individual suffered severe, life-threatening injuries due to the incident but has since been moved to stable condition. Authorities informed PEOPLE on Tuesday, Nov. 19, that he is anticipated to recover from his injuries.
Bodycam footage released by the Columbus Division of Police captured officers rushing to the scene of a burning truck, which had a heavily dented passenger side and a driver door that was jammed, according to CBS affiliate WBNS.
“I’m not gonna leave him in there,” a police officer was heard stating in the footage regarding the driver.
The officer approached the left side of the truck and opened the back passenger door, urging the driver to take her hand, as seen in the video. Ultimately, the officer managed to extract the driver with the assistance of another officer and a bystander, as reported by WBNS.
A 911 dispatch call made by the driver, who introduced himself as Randy, was shared by ABC affiliate WSYX. The audio reveals him informing the dispatcher that his truck collided with a highway pillar.
“I got up on I-270, and it’s, I can’t slow it down,” the man told the dispatcher.
Amidst the raging inferno consuming the truck, the man remarked, “It’s getting really hot in here. I can’t get out. My ankle is broken.”
Fearing for his life, the driver conveyed a heartfelt message to his wife: “Tell my wife I love her.”
According to WSYX, the officer who extracted the driver from the truck has been named Officer Gloria West. She received care for minor burns and is anticipated to recover well.
Authorities have confirmed that a specialized unit has arrived at the location to conduct an investigation, which is currently in progress.
