Over 223K Migrants Arrive in NYC, Straining City’s Resources and Shelters

Over 223,000 migrants have arrived in NYC to date — twice the population of Albany.

Over 223,000 migrants have arrived in New York City since the onset of the asylum seeker crisis, now surpassing the entire population of Albany.

Recent data reveals that the influx of asylum seekers has reached a figure comparable to nearly half of Staten Island’s population, which stands at 490,687, and about 15% of the residential population in Manhattan, totaling 1.6 million.

“Over the past two years, our teams have accomplished the Herculean task of providing compassionate care for a population twice the size of Albany and saving taxpayers billions of dollars,” Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement on Monday referencing the latest figures.

Since April 2022, the Big Apple has seen a significant influx of migrants, with over 58,000 currently receiving support funded by taxpayers, according to the latest data from City Hall.

During the week that concluded on Nov. 10, over 600 new asylum seekers came to Gotham and were accommodated in one of the 210 city-operated shelter locations throughout the five boroughs, according to the data.

The number has decreased from about 4,000 new migrant arrivals that were overwhelming the city each week in January.

Despite a significant slowdown in new arrivals in recent months, the overall shelter population has not seen a substantial decrease, according to the city’s data.

The mayor highlighted that city officials have successfully processed over 84,000 applications for work authorization and temporary protected status for migrants.

He proudly stated that the number of migrants under the city’s care has decreased for 19 straight weeks.

“The city has also purchased over 47,000 tickets to help migrants reach their preferred destinations and help reduce long-term costs for New York City taxpayers,” he said.
