Winter Weather Crisis Death Toll Climbs in Mid-Atlantic as Snow and Ice Hit Washington, Philly

HPP: Currently, cities in the mid-Atlantic region, such as Washington, Baltimore, and Philadelphia, are seeing substantial repercussions from heavy snow and ice as the first major winter storm of the year that has stretched across the United States is continuing its deadly march eastward.

The storm caused the first tornado of the year to form in California, which marked the beginning of its voyage across the country. It began its journey by crashing into the West Coast.

The winter weather then moved into the Plains and Midwest over the weekend, where blizzard conditions were seen at Kansas City International Airport.

Additionally, sleet and freezing rain resulted to several crashes across the region, beginning in Kansas and Missouri and continuing all the way to the Ohio Valley.

A youngster is among the six people who have lost their lives as a result of the storm, which has been linked to numerous states.

Interstate 29 in Mount City was the location where the Missouri State Highway Patrol reported that a driver who was 33 years old passed away after getting out of their vehicle. The victim, who was 33 years old and from Nebraska, was struck by the vehicle as it began to slide.

An additional fatality was recorded in the state of Missouri when a Public Works employee, who was 61 years old, was struck while performing snow removal operations in Jackson County, as reported by the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Because of the event, snow removal efforts were put on hold on Sunday, but they were restarted first thing on Monday morning.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Everett Carter, who dedicated 40 years of service to Jackson County, including the last 8 years with the Public Works team,” Jackson County officials stated.

The Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) reports that two persons were killed in a winter storm-related collision near southwest Wichita, Kansas, when a car on Interstate 235 lost control and veered off the road.

In another Kansas incident, a tractor-trailer swerved in snowy circumstances on Saturday in Ford County, killing a 28-year-old Dodge City man whose car collided with the tractor-trailer.

After a snow tube crash in Macon County, Illinois, authorities say one young person was murdered and another is receiving treatment for what they claim are life-threatening injuries.

In icy conditions, authorities reported that a guy operating an ATV was dragging two boys on an inner tube when the tube slid out during a turn and struck a big boulder.

The storm’s wrath reached the mid-Atlantic states on Monday, resulting in extensive power outages and significant delays to daily life and travel.

Additionally, power has been cut off throughout the area. Hundreds of thousands of outages were recorded by PowerOutage.US as of Monday afternoon in parts of Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Virginia.

Richmond’s water system malfunctioned due to power outages brought on by winter storms. A boil water advisory is in effect, and residents are being advised to use less water.

Another round of snow is approaching the area through Monday night, following a respite in the weather on Monday afternoon.

Residents were cautioned by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to remain vigilant during a weather break.

A snow emergency is declared in Washington, while a state of emergency is declared in Maryland.

Governors in a number of states, including Maryland, issued a state of emergency ahead of the storm, advising citizens to stay at home if at all possible to ensure their safety because of the hazardous driving conditions on the area’s roads and highways.

Mayor Muriel Bowser of Washington, D.C., issued a snow emergency declaration for Tuesday that would last until the end of the day. The pre-treatment of roads was scheduled to start on Sunday night, and cars were instructed not to park on snow emergency routes.

Schools in Washington, D.C., were also closed Monday because of the upcoming severe winter storm. The school district declared on Monday night that Tuesday will also see the cancellation of all sessions.

Stormy Weekend Ahead for North Carolina: Wet and Wintry Weather Expected

Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Philadelphia (PHL) International have all reported hundreds of cancellations, according to FlightAware.

On Monday night, Reagan International shut down every runway so that workers could clear the snow.
