Western Michigan is bracing for a winter mix of rain and snow starting Monday night, which could hinder holiday traffic along major routes like I-96.

The National Weather Service advises that freezing rain may cause icy road conditions, making commutes hazardous through Monday evening and early Tuesday morning.

According to the National Weather Service, precipitation will begin Monday afternoon as light snow and progress to freezing rain by the evening.

Temperatures are forecast to stay around 30°F, increasing the risk of ice buildup on untreated surfaces. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra travel time, lower speeds, and keep emergency kits in their vehicles.

Monday’s weather calls for daytime highs of 36°F with southeast winds gusting up to 20 mph. Wind and ice precipitation might cause limited visibility and hazardous conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses.
